This is what I experienced when staying in Roberts/tropicfish's hostel Cafe del Mar 3Js on Big Corn Island, Nicaragua may this year.
we stayed in a hut made out of bamboo poles with mosquito netts streached in between, and a door that you cannot lock, but as we had only heard good things about the island we didn{t think it would be a problem, however I atleast got me documents and passport locked up in the managers private room.
My last night on the island, saturday21. of may-sunday22. of may I was the only one sleeping in a hammock, my two new friends slept on mattresses up a ladder at the far end of the room, we were the only guests at that point.
I woke up at around 3.30-4.00 in the morning, and I notice two people silently walking around in the room, my two friend obviously, apparently packing their last stuff and on their way out to watch the moonlight as the sky is unusually clear tonight, I imagine, as they walk to and from the bags all the time, putting stuff on the table etc. they go outside, and i lay wondering if i should join them or not, i hate missing out on stuff, but before i have made up my mind they come back inside, and i resume to pretend that i am asleep as i can´t be bothered talking, i´m too tired. one of them walks under my hammock by my feet, towards the ladder, but does strangely not climb it. few seconds later they both bend down over my head, on the other side of my hammock, can´t understand why they do this. Out of nowhere I am pushed at my legs, and i realize that there are more than 2 people in the room, that they are definately not my friends, and that i am in danger. I scream, and as I do I am grabbed by 3 pairs of hands, and a gun is pulled to my neck. I fight desperantely, get my hand on the gun but they remove my hand, and i scream as lound as I can, terrified that they will kidnap me, rape me and then kill me, I need to wake someone up!! They tell me to "Shut up! Be quiet!" and after a while the gun is pressed even tighter to my neck, and the one holding it hisses"shut up or I´ll shot you." I am quiet, and my friends have finally woken up. they are commanded down, one stays up there and is accompanied by one robber, me and y other friend, both with a gun pressed to our heads, are pushed down on the floor, while the robbers demand us to "Find da money!" we search through all our stuff that ay scattered onthe floor, without finding them, and we explain where we had it, how much/little it was, and that they must{ve found it allready. one of them pulls my friend to the wall, another, the one pressing a gun to my head and occasionally my neck sits down next to me, presses his mouth to mine and demands me to kiss him. i cry, and begs him to stop, someone pulls me to the floor, and the man with the gun forcefully remoives my blanket and start touching me. I cry louder, but i do not dear to scream as the gun is still pressed to my neck, saying he cannot do this to me. My friend comes down the ladder behind me, and sees what is happening and he demands that the guy stops what he is doing to me. my friend is imediately punched in the face, so hard that he falls to he ground, and the man is not stoping at all.
amazingly enogh, less that 1 minute later, they leave, before they are able to finishwhat they were trying. my friend that was being held, and groaped as well closer to the door says that there were some guys oputside saying "lets go! lets go!"
we wake up the hostel manager, she appologizes and tells us that "This does not happen very often," implying that it does happen now and then. At the police station we ask how many times a year this happens, they say 5, 6 with this, apparently interpreting the question as "how many times this year has this happened?"
My friend that was punched in the face with a gun suffers from weak memory loss, broken nose, swollen lip and a deep cut on his chin, that is stiched.
another of our friends was involved as well, he lived in a dormitory hidden from the beach, but this night he had sat on the beach with a local guy in his early 20s talking. around 4ish the guy leaves to get more rum, and my mate goes down to tha water to wash his feet. as he turns around someone puts a chain around his neck, a gun to his head, tells him to be quiet and drags him into our hut, where they demand him to wake me up, he pushes my hammock, and for the rest of the drama he is held at gunpoint by the far wall.
I urge you all, if you still want to go to Big Corn Island, to please, for your own safety, stay somewhere you can lock the door!!
there are many nice, friendly people on the island, but, believe me, the crime rate is HIGH, one month earlier 2 big time robbers and drug dealers where shot dead by the military, according to all the people i spoke to, at the very beach our hostel lies, the same morning we were robbed the police told us a women had been raped and beaten up another place on the island, a local woman, not a tourist, and the corn i
